Description

Had trouble getting into it at first but the book lends so much to understanding Harry and how he transforms through the years. Harry then begins to link the path of the circus with the murders, and sees that they are shockingly close, with a few minor discrepancies. Andrew is Harry's assigned liaison and general sidekick, a large aboriginal man who used to be a boxer and a generally fit man. Hole (Holy) is the usual flawed character; recovering/back-sliding alcoholic, not universally liked or respected by his own Police Department transported like other before him to the land down-under. After three years military service he attended business school and formed the band Di derre ('Them There').

Harry gets kicked out his hotel, and he drunkenly stumbles, bottle in hand, until he finds a suitable cheap hotel to stay in. Harry learns of Andrews history as a boxer when he takes Harry to see a boxing match of the Jim Chivers boxing team.

This is the first of the Harry Hole novels, introducing the character, but it was very late in being translated to English.

For the first third of the book or so, I liked Harry, I felt the story was building andI was enjoying a bit of Australian lore and culture.I have absolutely no desire to read this now, but I’m wondering what other Australian readers will make of this. Murder, especially one which hasn’t been cleared up, isn’t a good advert for the town, so we’re doing what we can.
