Starting School gives you and your little one glimpses of all the learning they will do and all the fun they will have. The brilliant children’s bowel and bladder charity ERIC have lots of support on this if you are worried.

Read a starting school book together - now obviously I’m going to recommend my own one (blow my own trumpet much? It explains the broad basics of the curriculum in a really easy to understand way and cuts through all the jargon to tell you exactly what it is you need to actually know as a parent supporting your child at home.

Trading Address (Warehouse) Unit E, Vulcan Business Complex, Vulcan Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE5 3EB. Let them do your buttons and zips up – obviously at home – no one wants to be flying low or flashing a tit in soft play! Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Unlike nursery staff, the ratio of adults to children in a school is often very different and they don’t have time to help every little person zip up their coat or put their trousers back on after PE. And, of course, this book includes lots of five-minute games and activities designed by Daisy to help your child feel confident and excited about taking the big step to big school.

Zips and buttons – play games designed to help with finger strength and fine motor skills like The Washing Line or the spraying game here or pushing pasta through small holes in a box. It had to be fun for him, and quick for me because I also had a 1 year old to keep my eyes on at all times. Whatever your child really enjoys tell them those things will be there and ask them what they think they will find too. It goes without saying that Mummy and Daddy’s secret chocolate cupboard and wine/gin/tequila stash is generously contributed to of course. Galt Rainbow lab - this kit is fun to do anyway but the pipettes, tubes and little pots are brilliant for basic potion play afterwards using the food colouring. You could read it all at once or dip into it during the build up to this big new adventure - it’s entirely up to you and your little one! If you are after a sneak peak from my new book Time for School (out on 15th April 2021) then you’re in luck. It gently guides the readers through every element from the classroom, after school club, uniforms, lunchtimes, assemblies, playground, making friends, asking for help and more, with tips tricks and games along the way. In any of the games we played or when learning something new, whenever my little one’s got frustrated at not being able to do something, I would always calmly explain there’s no need to get cross if you can ask for help. Start once you know your school place, mentioning it every so often, then as you approach a month or two before try and have a chat every couple of days or so.

So, to try and keep her sanity she started to come up with quick, easy games using stuff from around the house. Use the plastic punnets that fruit from the supermarket comes in to organise your snack drawer or cupboard. But for other children they instead will use 50 or 100 tiny little blocks to build up to that same level. She's managed to come up with a huge array of activities for kids that are fun and educational yet don't require an Art degree or Diploma in Patience to execute. If you’re doing a little something here and there to support them then you are building those crucial blocks.Five minutes here and there, with fun and games together, it doesn't have to just be homework - it becomes quality family time. Try to ensure you are always saying things like ‘I saw how hard you tried to do up that button yourself” even if they didn’t actually manage to do up the button, the trying is the bit we want to praise to encourage them to continue to do so even when the outcome wasn’t quite what they wanted. If you’d rather hear me chat through these ideas than read the article below then here is a video of me talking through all things starting school - WATCH HERE. I recommend, throughout the months leading up to starting school, regularly having five minute chats about their new school. I feel as I’ve been both on the school side and the parent side I have a helpful insight to support those that might feel overwhelmed by this big new adventure.

Here you will find all of my five minute posts on tips, tricks and advice, from things I’ve learned along the way. So I started doing bits and bobs, five minutes a day, to help get him ready the best way I knew how. This helps the kids see what goes where so when they help themselves it doesn’t become a massive mess. All the little moments we spent playing five minute games, or reading with him, slowly but surely building the blocks have lead to this. Packed full of games and activities designed to help children feel confident and excited about learning, Time For School will support them - and you!
